“First of all, let’s get one thing straight. Your Italy and our Italia are not the same thing. Italy is a soft drug peddled in predictable packages, such as hills in the sunset, olive groves, lemon trees, white wine, and raven-haired girls. Italia, on the other hand, is a maze. It’s alluring, but complicated. It’s the kind of place that can have you fuming and then purring in the space of a hundred meters, or in the course of ten minutes. Italy is the only workshop in the world that can turn out both Botticellis and Berlusconis.”Beppe Severgnini, La Bella Figura: A Field Guide to the Italian Mind

In Italy in Love

Beautiful, Mysterious Italy! This amazing country has a plenty of allures, or love attractions, that make us sigh… Yes. But now please stop for a moment!

What you’re probably thinking right now could be reassumed to: “ok, just another blog about Italy. Maybe useful, but….boring, boring, boring.” Well, not exactly.

How This Blog Works…

In order to explain better how this blog works, let’s state first what is beyond the objectives of this blog.

What This Blog Is Not

First,

the blog “In Italy in Love” is not a tourist guidebook. There are a lot of people who’ve done that before me. Take, for exampe, travel bestsellers or numerous websites about Italy. They are all full of high-quality photographs and accurate descriptions about Italian cities. Moreover, they provide travelers with all needed information on Italians museums one must visit. As well as on monuments, art, sculpture and paintings one must see. So why redo the job that’s already done?

Second,

the blog “In Italy in Love” is not an Italian fashion magazine. Again, there are a lot of people who do that already: from fashion channels to fashion glossy magazines and infinite web blogs. Yet, here and there, time after time, I may spell a word about Italian fashion tendencies or my favourite Italian designers. I’m a woman, after all!

Third,

in the very same way, the blog “In Italy in Love” is not a complete overview of Italian cuisine and wine. Today, there’s no need to do that as well. Still, time after time I will talk about Italian wine or food. Or mention some of Italian restaurants. Not in order to compete with TripAdvisor or other blogs. But in order to underline Italian general, as well as most recent tendencies, that are among the most alluring ones. All to convey the individual flavour of Italian life style.

Forth and last,

the blog “In Italy in Love” is not an attempt to be any kind of accademic research on cultural differences. Again, there are a a lot of studies on the subject. Yet, for how much these studies can result interesting and useful, they are barely read if not by other researchers of the field. First, due to strictly scientific language and terminology used, such works are hardly popular among common people. Second, most studies on cultural differences are often published only in scientific magazines. So, no wonder that ordinary people, like you and me, are hardly aware of the existance of such works. It’s a real pity, given the interest they might have arisen among travellers and businessmen. From all over the world.

Summarizing the concept of “In Italy in Love”…

In other words, I’m not going to pour on you every single detail describing the allures of Italy, or Italian love attractions, even if they all are so worth to.

Don’t get me wrong! Personally, I’m deeply in love with Italy. Yet, I refuse to list easily obtainable information like “vacations must take”, “cities must visit”, “dishes must taste”, or “where to shop?” There are a lot of people who’ve done that before me and continue doing their great job on everyday basis. Information exposed on most of such sites is objective, up-to-date and extremely correct from every point of view.

However, in my opinion, a bare description, even if exhaustive, often lacks a personal, and hence charismatic element. The element, which  is crucial to every narration in order to make the reading addictive. Especially in today’s standardized, stamped and simplified world.

What This Blog Is About

This is the moment where I would like to clarify that I write this blog to picture Italy just as it is. Purely and entirely from my personal standpoint. Not as a tourist or a shopping guide, nor as a sommilier or food critic, neither as an academic researcher or some-Made-in-Italy-stuff advertiser.

Tired of conventional Baedekers, I want to give you a fresh and independent insight on living in Italy today. I’m going to explore how the world’s famous Italian style is connected with actual Italian way to be. Starting with what’s fluctuating on the surface, step by step, or post by post, I’m going to dig up and reveal the core meaning of Italian attitudes, Italian contradictory believes, behaviours and emotions.

In other words, this blog is ment to be a cultural research. As well as a kind of sincere spiritual investigation. So, on the posts of this blog we’ll be exploring Italian culture in order to highlight its essential features. In an entertaining way and easily comprehensible language to all normal people.

In order to do that, in this blog I will report only true stories of being “In Italy In Love”  based on direct experience and real events. Here I would also like to specify, that I’ve decided to change the names of my friends and all other persons whose stories, interview and opinions will appear on the posts of this blog, in order to protect their privacy.

Mission

The mission of this blog is to portray modern Italian culture and society just as it is.

First, in nowadays globalized world, traveling and collaborating with people from all over the world has become an ordinary practice. On the other hand, we are yet ever more aware of cultural differences which acquire ever increasing importance. Hence to deal with people you must understand their culture, their life style and national mentality. As well as recent social and mental trends.

Whilst it is easy to gain general information about Italian culture and current events watching TV, from newspapers and on the Internet… Yet, this useful information is barely enough to understand Italian in-depth mentality and Italian people! Just as Beppe Severgnini said: “Your Italy and our Italia are not the same thing”.

Hence the mission of this blog is to help people from all over the world:

  • First, to understand better Italian cultural shape, Italian attitudes and Italian contradictory believes
  • Second, to gain a profound insight into Italian mentality and Italian world picture as a whole
  • Third, to break through a barrier of incomprehension caused by cultural differences
  • Fourth, to establish better communication with Italian people
  • Fith, to see and find similarities and differences, i.e. to compare modern Italian society and its trends to that of your own

FAQ & Pursuing The Mission

Why do I think I am the right person to do this?

In all modesty, my education profile (I’ve got two Master’s degrees, both with Hons, in Social Sciences and International Communication) and real-world life experiences enable me to precisely observe and correctly analyze different situations. People. Their attitudes. And their mentality. How do I do that? Please read about it on my page dedicated to research and methods.

Am I reliable? Well, that’s up to you to decide. Yet, if you want my honest opinion: absolutely yes! Otherwise, I woudn’t mind to write and share.

In addition, I am open to any discussion and any dispute!

What my benefits are?

I live, I enjoy (or not), I observe, I analize, I potray.  If people enjoy my work, find my observation interesting and my potrayal of modern Italian society useful, I benefit.

If some people don’t like the work I’ve been doing here, yet I benefit. Since I do what I like: I live, I enjoy (or not), I observe, I analize, I potray. As Socrates said: “The unexamined life is not worth living.”

So, I examine and I share. As much as I’ve seen and learned with my contemporaries. People from all aver the world. So, if they do appreciate my work, I benefit twice.

Why my insight is independent and influence-resistant?

Being non-native, my insight is disconnected form Italian root mentality. This gives me an advantage to experience the Italian way of living on tabula rasa, i.e. without expectations reaffirmed by congenital mentality in subconscious of native Italians.

A general example (suitable to every national mentality) may be useful here… Let’s admit Italian people do certain things in a proper Italian way. And whilst to the people from the other nations the Italian way to deal with certain things in a certain way may appear strange and weird, it results absolutely normal to Italians. Do you see my point?

In addition, the fact that I’ve been living in Italy for over 12 years already, permits me to analyze and portray the Italian way of thinking without any kind of  prejudice.

Must admit, however, that my own way of thinking has been somewhat affected (since highly involved) and enriched with nowadays variety of Italian standards, on one side. As well as with profound learning and understanding of Italian traditions, culture and mentality, on the other.

Sincere Spiritual Investigation…

My personal interest and my deepest curiosity is to find out how do Italian culture, Italian style, and Italian cult of enjoying the life with all its allures (no matter what!) connect. As well as, how they affect the inner world of Non-Italians. Is Italian way of living contagious? Do people really change their way of being after visiting Italy? Yes. How? Just like me.

How am I going to find all the answers? Well, since I’m Legally Blonde with Honours (twice, by the way), I’ll just conduct the spiritual investigation on being “in Italy in Love”.

In Italy in Love

Why “in Love”?

  • First, nothing as Love can disclose the human’s nature.
  • Second, Love it’s the most euphoric feeling and it has a lot of related emotions, such as: jealous, hate, friendship, ecc.
  • Third, Love’s origins may vary. And according to its origins, shades of Love may differ significantly.
  • Fourth, all people need love, inspite of their age, occupation or sexual prefererncies. And in Italy people are always in love – whether they are natives or tourists, single or happily married.

Why in Italy?

Well, if you are “dark and twisted”, sceptic or  taciturn, not necessarily you are in love with another person. But quite surely you’ll be in love with one, or more, Italian allures – from legendary sports cars to famous couture’s brands and fashion boutiques, architecture to sculpture and painting masterpieces to, amazing sea sides to winter sports resorts and farm holidays, luxurious hotels to rustic villas and camping, renowned restaurants to pizzerias and bars. Let alone passionate Italian lovers and beautiful mysterious ladies.

Seriously, haven’t you ever secretly fancy about being withdrawn from your ordinary life and somewhat dissolved (for holliday or lifetime) in some of Italian allures? If your answer is “yes”, your diagnosis is positive: you are in love with Italy.  Just as me.
Anyway, if you are a deeply convinced sceptic and persuaded pain in the ass (sorry! Usually, I’m very polite girl!), and non of above-mentioned Italian allures which Italy is home to, including human factor and Italian language, does not make your hardened heart beat faster, just stop reading! There’s non need to create extra traffic nor in Italy (Italia could be recognized as the capital of the world’s traffic), neither in Love (that leads to confusion!). Besides, you never know when Love actually happens…

What else to say before get started? Three things to keep in mind:

  • Hardly any other European country can list as many allures, or love attractions, as Italy…
  • Curiosity and temptation, are the synonyms of visiting Italy
  • Experience and exploration, to which that curiosity and temptation lead, are the synonyms of living in Italy in Love.
Attention please! This blog does not carry any responsibility  for Love or any tempation you may experience during your visit to Italy. Both, in the real life, or while reading the articles of this blog.

Keep reading and you will learn more about being in Italy in Love….
